Website Design and Branding Process

Over the years, The Placemaking Group's interdisciplinary team has streamlined its web development process to suit all clients' needs. Whether the project is large or small, a remodel or a new site, we apply the same core process: define the project, develop site structure, identify brand architecture, create visual design, produce content, do the production and launch the site.

Following this process is helpful to our clients because it keeps the project on track for deliverables, approval stages, expectations and results. Upon kickoff of a new project, our clients receive a detailed chart outlining each step within the process.

  1. Web development planning: Defining the project
    • Discovery: Learning the aspects of your business
    • Planning: Determine site objectives and scope of work
    • Clarify: Document and summarize findings from discovery and planning steps
    • Develop: Branding Blueprint
    • Ideas: Creative brief with concepts for communicating the brand
    • Functionality Specifications: Based on the planning meeting, we will write and review with you a list of functionality requirements to meet your objectives. They can include such items as a blog, content management system (CMS), news feeds or form storage.
  2. Web development planning: Site structure
    • Navigation: Develop site map, naming and labeling system
  3. Website visual design
    • Creative Sessions : Develop concepts and apply rough visuals
    • Design: Refine concepts and visuals
  4. Website content development
    • Content Plan : Develop plan for copies, photos, logos and other content
    • Develop Copy : Create and/or edit and proofread
    • Search Engine Optimization: Write keywords, descriptions, page titles and other relevant information; plan how the site will be maintained to add new information regularly
    • Page Schematics : Develop schematics for each page within the site
  5. Web programming
    • Define functionality using use cases and a check list of options
    • Programming with client review on a regular basis
    • Database: Design, develop and populate
    • Create segments of site, templates for the Content Management System or html or php pages
  6. Web build and production
    • Production: Create pages, populate with content and images
    • SEO: Write and insert meta tags for SEO
    • Final Prototypes: Test for bugs, develop beta site, other testing and final changes
