Beyonce Asks: Fix My Website!

This is perfect timing. Right after our last post on this blog where we talk about what is the important rule when designing a website, Beyonce shows that she understands! She wants a website that tells her story in images and words– her brand! The website she has now is basically a blog, and it doesn’t represent her brand. That’s what we make sure our clients understand– our goal is to tell your story -your brand- effectively to your core audience, the people you want to influence!

Here’s some of her story…

“Beyonce herself hates the website because she doesn’t think that it looks like who she is as an artist, someone who likes fashion and art and photography and travel,” said one executive familiar with Ms. Knowles’ plans. “She has all sorts of interests and wants to communicate that,” said the person, adding that the star wants the new site to be “daring and forward-thinking.” Click here to read the whole article in AdAge.

This is really interesting! Are you going to be helping with the new website? Maybe one of the groups from our class can come up with something for her as a client? Wouldn’t that be fun! I bet my group would be really interested… if only we could get Beyonce to agree….

First of all, if the brand is a person, how can another person represent this brand? No one else knows exactly what, in this case Beyonce, thinks, likes, and feels. So, as her request indicates, she wants to tell her story in images and words combined. If you can see photos while reading about it, it’s obviously easier to understand what the writer wants to explain.
Last semester I took an advertising class, and we learned a lot about branding and how important it is to make people aware of your brand. First I thought a brand is only connected to products, like Nike, but we did an exercise when we branded ourselves. So now I understand Beyonce’s frustration of wanting her brand to be displayed, not only by blog posts.

I have been interning at a Public Relation company and I have experienced this first hand. We have a client that previously had a few hardships and since then they are trying to rebuild their brand and get the word out. Not only have we redesigned their website but also their social media sites: such as Webster and twitter. I think it is vital for companies to utilize social media sites to build their brand. This goes back to the idea that whatever you put on the internet defines you.

Oh this is exciting! We should have entered to do this as a class! Our Pretty N Pink PR team dealt with this a bit with our company’s blog. It didnt really define how great they were. EVERYTHING that you publish defines who you are, and for Beyonce, its her image makes up almost everything that she is as a star. Her website should be filled with photos, her clothing collection, videos, free downloads, and many many many more things. She is all over social media, and who isn’t these days, but in order to stay on top, you almost have to continue to reinvent your social media sites and keep them updated as celebrities constantly reinvent themselves.

This is great! This just shows that even celebrities need help with promoting themselves and with so much spotlight it hard to actually find out what is true and what is false about a celebrity. Beyonce wanting people to know her story is a good way to connect with her fans and this is something that companies need as well. I mean when every we buy something there is always a little tag telling us about how the company was found and what they are trying to do and i think Beyonce is doing that exactly.

This is really neat! I feel like Beyonce’s problems are the same as any other public figure, brand or company. people need to feel like the technology that represents them actually does them justice to how they would like to be perceived to the world. But I also think there is a major difference between public figures, like Beyonce, and companies. I worked for the Jonas Brothers over the summer and specifically with Joe Jonas as he tried to launch his solo career and establish an identity away from his brothers. They needed to design a media plan and PR outreach which created a new identity from his previous persona. It seems to be essential in web design, that you need to truly represent the artist or company in a way that is truly individualist to their personal message and what sets them apart and makes them different. Whether is a different genera of music or advertising what your company can do for the consumer, it is all about getting the audience’s attention and showing why they should watch you and your company/ project.

I really agree with this. Beyonce has been is a very visual music performer. Her fashion and style are really important to her, and a blog with words doesn’t represent her brand very well. I was reading a book on branding by Scott Bedbury called “A New Brand World”, about branding in the 21st century, and he says that “cracking your brand’s genetic code” is the most important step to take in a brand. It’s really important to tap into your brand’s identity and communicate this not only externally, but also internally to those who help support and run your brand. By doing this, you can prevent blunders like this happening.

This is awesome! It is so true that we should all be very careful what would put our name on. Similar to how we have be apprehensive on what we post, upload, and portray ourselves on our twitter and facebook. Since Beyonce is a public a figure she has to be even more aware of how she portray herself to the public. Her website is one of the public forums she has control what is published and how she looks therefore, I think it is VERY important she makes sure she revamps her website to expose her true personality.
