Malcolm Gladwell’s new book “Outliers” and Irv Hamilton on Crisis Management.

“Why do some people succeed far more than others?” That’s the opening line on the book cover of Malcolm Gladwell’s new best seller “Outliers.” In it he writes about how a person needs a lot of things going his or her way to reach success. One of those things is having worked at something for 10,000 hours. In Gladwell’s opinion, this experience makes a person an expert. My associate at Placemaking Group, Irv Hamilton, is clearly an expert in Public Relations.

Halfway through this fascinating book about success, Gladwell then turns to the subject of how certain kinds of disaster can be cultural. And the example he uses is a situation in which Irv was completely involved!      (more…)

Robert Sher of CEO to CEO is working diligently to get famous. He coaches CEOs. He has lots of great clients, but he knows that you don’t stop marketing even though you’ve got a lot of business. He wants all CEOs in the Bay Area to know that if they need good advice and coaching, to give him a call. What are the tools he uses to make sure he is known for his talent? He’s written a book called “The Feel of the Deal, How I Built a Company through Acquisitions.” He also makes sure that he can be found by anyone searching online for CEO advice. A city’s events represent the city’s brand to the rest of the world.

What happens when an event your city produces each year starts to descend in popularity?

Cities have an interesting dilemma. They have downtowns that are becoming the meeting and gathering places for their populations. And they probably have a downtown association that takes care of keeping people interested in their downtown. Often the association is not well-funded, so they are encouraged to put on events like art and wine festivals to bring in money to keep the association solvent.
